Elephantine Island is one of the most ancient sites in Egypt and the main location of Khnum worship. When the Aswan Dam was built, many pre-dynastic artefacts including the very popular mummified Ram of Khnum, were found and placed in a museum. The museum is housed in the villa of Sir William Willcocks, architect of the old Aswan Dam.
The villa became a museum in 1912 and a newer extension was added in 1998. The museum boasts many mummies and sarcophagi including a small clay sarcophagus containing the mummy of a child wrapped in layers of linen.
