The tomb of Mentuhotep I, who united Egypt under his reign during the 11th dynasty, is next to Deir al Bahri, on Luxor’s West Bank. Sadly the millennia have taken their toll on this once great temple, which includes architecture similar to that of the pyramids. The temple was located next to the cult site of the Goddess Hathor in ancient Thebes, and many Egyptologists believe that the construction’s shape was similar to that of nearby Deir al Bahri except with a pyramid shape protruding from the roof. The ruins are interesting and the core structure of the temple is still in good condition. Just a two minute walk from Deir al Bahri, it’s well worth the visit.
